The first step is to prepare your bootable Gentoo installation media using the "Minimal installation CD" found on the Gentoo website. You download the installation ISO image and you use a tool to flash the ISO to the USB drive. If you are on Linux or macOS you can use the dd command, and if you are on Windows you can use Rufus.
Once your installation media is ready, boot your PC from the USB drive, and start Gentoo. If you have enough RAM you can use the (cached) option upon booting the installation media, to prevent any problem which could happen with a minor USB drive failure.
The first thing we need to do before starting to install, obviously, is to connect to the Internet. If you are using a wired connection the setup is automatically done by Gentoo. Connecting to a wireless network requires interacting with the CLI interface for NetworkManager.
To connect to your Wi-Fi network, use the following NetworkManager command, where SSID is your network name and PASS your network password:
nmcli device wifi connect SSID password PASS
You should get a message saying that the wireless connection has been successfully activated. If there is an error, double-check your wireless credentials. Once connected, we test the connection using the ping command:
ping -c 4 www.e621.net
If our ping tests work, we can proceed with the next step.
